The 1864-5 monthly serialisation of Anthony Trollope’s

Can You Forgive Her?

for Chapman and Hall marked one of the most creative and productive periods of his life. In 1862 and 1863 alone, Trollope had either finished or worked on

Orley Farm

(1862),

Brown, Jones, and Robinson

(1862),

The Small House at Allington

(1862),

Rachel Ray

(1863), and

The Tales of All Countries

(1863). Amidst this dizzying output, Trollope embarked in August 1863 on a serial novel for a new periodical for Chapman and Hall, tentatively titled the

New Weekly

which he was to edit (Trollope, 1863

231). While the new periodical did not materialise,

Can You Forgive Her?

would begin its monthly serialisation in January 1864, becoming the first of the six-volume series known as the Palliser novels.
