Anthony Trollope was born in London on 24 April 1815 to Thomas Anthony Trollope (1774-1835) and Frances Milton (1779-1863). His father, who suffered from depression, failed both as a lawyer and as a farmer. As he explains in his
Autobiography(published posthumously in 1883) the family's subsequent poverty made the young schoolboy Trollope feel humiliated, miserable and resentful of the rigid social hierarchy in Harrow and Winchester. When the family's financial troubles became overwhelming the Trollopes moved to Belgium. Later, in one of a number of abortive money-making schemes, Frances Trollope took her three youngest children to America to set up a department store in the city of New Harmony, Memphis, leaving Anthony behind with his father.
