Although it seems reasonable to draw a distinct line between the Middle Age and the Renaissance or the early modern age at ca. 1500, in a good number of literary cases such a demarcation does not make much sense because many works’ popularity continued far into the next centuries. This reception process can be observed more often than not especially when we think of many fifteenth-century prose texts (formerly called

Volksbücher

or 

chapbooks

) that were based on medieval romances (in verse), originally copied by hand (manuscripts), and were then printed since the late fifteenth century (incunabula and early modern prints) and sold in the early modern book markets. One example would be the
