In 2005, Steinunn Sigurðardóttir published the novel

Sólskinshestur

[Sunday Child]. The book was well received by readers and critics alike and was nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize. In 2023, the work was reissued in an Icelandic classics book series, highlighting its importance in Icelandic literary history. The novel has also been translated into several languages and has gained significant popularity in Germany and France.

Sólskinshestur

primarily explores the profound consequences of growing up with parental neglect. Although Steinunn had touched on aspects of childhood and difficult parent-child relationships in her previous works, she had neither made childhood a central theme nor addressed serious child neglect until she wrote
