The Little Lame Prince

in Leipzig, Germany, in 1874, to prevent pirated copies in both the U.K. and U.S.  Unauthorized editions were rampant in the Victorian era, and this attention to detail demonstrates Dinah Craik’s shrewdness as a businesswoman.

The Little Lame Prince is perhaps Craik’s most popular work for children, and remains in print. In the mid- twentieth century the tale was frequently published with The Adventures of a Brownie (1872) in gift book editions. At the time of its publication,
