Jóhann Sigurjónsson was an Icelandic playwright and a poet who enjoyed unparalleled success during his lifetime and immense respect ever since. Jóhann was born in 1880 and brought up on his family’s farm Laxamýri in the north-east of Iceland. His parents were well-off farmers during harsh times. For example, they were able to send all eight children to school in Reykjavík, something that was uncommon at the time, especially for girls (Jónsson). Jóhann finished his studies at the Latínuskólinn of Reykjavík in 1899. The same fall, he went to Denmark to study veterinary treatment at the Agricultural University in Copenhagen.
