White Teethever since (and even before) its publication (Hamish Hamilton, 2000), Zadie Smith’s first novel is often overshadowed by the media event into which it was fast transformed and the various misrepresentations and expropriations to which it has been subjected at the hands of critics, academics, social collectives and political groupings. So much is it so that the novel’s own undistorted voice is barely heard amid all the hysteria it almost certainly had no wish to provoke.
