was published in two parts, the first in 1678 and the second in
1686. For over two centuries it was a best-seller, a religious
classic perhaps more than a literary classic. Even now, while not
the most popular work in the literary canon, it continues to
attract critical attention, and to be expounded, adapted,
simplified and illustrated for the Christian market. Apart from the
