The first bound editions of this work were published in three separate volumes by Dickens’s publishers of the day, Bradbury and Evans (released 1852-1854). The first editions of

A Child’s History

were sold and marketed as Christmas gift books—ornate duodecimo volumes, featuring an illustrated, gold-embossed cover, red cloth boards, marbled endpapers and edges, a specially arranged “Table of Dates”, and an elaborate frontispiece illustrated by F. W. Topham.
