The third novel William Faulkner wrote, probably beginning in late 1926 or early 1927, was Flags in the Dust. The novel as it was eventually published, however, on 31 January 1929 (Blotner, 193), was not the work Faulkner had originally written, but was instead a considerably shortened version entitled Sartoris.
