Introduction

In 1697, Charles Perrault published eight fairy tales under the title Histoires ou contes du temps passé avec des moralités (Histories or Tales of Past Times, with Morals), five of which had appeared in his earlier presentation manuscript, “Contes de ma mere l’oye” (wr. 1695; Tales by My Mother Goose). Although initially intended for adults, the tales were reprised and redefined for an audience of children during the nineteenth century.
