This novel is Connelly’s first, and it introduces Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch, the character at the center of the extended series for which Connelly has become most widely known. Bosch is a Vietnam veteran serving in the Robbery and Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). When we are introduced to him, he has already been a cop for two decades, and he has established a reputation as a relentless and skilled investigator with little patience for the public-relations concerns or political ambitions of his superiors.
