[The Saga of Hávarðr of Ísafjörðr] is one of the
Íslendingasögur[Sagas of Early Icelanders], with most of its plot taking place in the late tenth century in Iceland’s Westfjords region. Though believed to be medieval, it is only extant in paper manuscripts. Its two oldest text witnesses are 1) the Icelandic saga collection AM 160 fol., and 2) the highly annotated AM 502 4to. Both are from the mid-seventeenth century, meaning that the saga is difficult to date accurately.
Hávarðar saga is often listed as a part of the so-called post-classical sagas, indicating its later provenance. Guðni Jónsson has pointed at several hypothesized quotes of and references to an hypothesized older version of Hávarðar saga in Landnámabók [The Book of Settlement]
