Ukraine Diarieswas primarily an eyewitness account of the run-up to, and the immediate aftermath of, the Revolution of Dignity, observed from close quarters in Kyiv,
Diary of an Invasionis largely based on other people’s and media impressions of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Kurkov relates from his wartime refuge in Transcarpathia. Like many of his fellow authors in Ukraine and elsewhere, Kurkov embarks on a mission to present a Ukrainian version of the disastrous events to whoever is ready to pay attention:
