was David Storey’s first play. He wrote it at the age of twenty-four while he was living in London and working as a teacher in a tough London school; by then, he had written seven novels, none of which had found a publisher, but he had never written a play before and had rarely been to the theatre. As he recalls in his introduction to volume one of his published plays, he came home for a half-term weekend break, found yet another returned typescript and rejection slip waiting for him, and “suddenly had the notion that [he] might not be a novelist but a playwright” (ix): “I wanted to get something down in the shortest possible time that would convey my then feelings of frustration and despair” (ix).
