Ikiru(which means ‘to live’) which is based on the Leo Tolstoy novella
The Death of Ivan Ilyich(1886).
Livingpremiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2022 and was then shown at major film festivals (Toronto, Telluride, Venice, San Sebastian). During awards season 2023 numerous nominations for the screenplay (including an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay) recognized Ishiguro’s “tremendous screenwriting”, as playwright David Hare characterizes it.
