Anhelli

, a narrative poem by Juliusz Słowacki (1809–1848), one of the leading authors of Polish Romanticism, was published in Paris in 1838. Written in poetic prose and comprising seventeen chapters, it is characterized by a symbolic and oneiric style. Although ostensibly centered around the fate of Polish exiles in Siberia, the work’s individual elements invoke non-literary experiences, while the stories of the exiles are an artistic reinterpretation of the political situation of the time.

Anhelli offers reflections on the condition of the Polish nation after the final partition of Poland by Austria, Prussia and Russia. Poles who resisted Russian rule and took part in armed uprisings or were found guilty of other political crimes would usually have their estates confiscated and then
