Wilber Macey Stone highlights the popularity of the book in that “no copy of that first edition has ever been found”, suggesting that “children read them all to pieces” (Stone, 334-35). Julian Roberts adds that it was, in fact, one of the “most substantial and enduringly popular books ever produced for English children during the eighteenth century” as it was “continuously in print from the eighteenth to the twentieth century” (67).
