(October 1917) by Edward Thomas was the first substantial collection of the poet’s work, published posthumously six months after his death at the Battle of Arras. Its contents had been selected and approved by Thomas himself by October 1916. The book first appeared under the pen-name “Edward Eastaway”, which he had previously used when publishing a few of his poems in anthologies and in a 1916 booklet. The second impression (December 1917) appeared in Edward Thomas’s own name. Thomas is known to have written 144 poems between December 1914 and January 1917, and sixty-four of them appear in
