[The Ukrainian Muse] is a 1908 anthology of Ukrainian poetry that was published by poet, editor, translator, and literary historian Oleksa Kovalenko (1880–1927). Printed by Petro Bars
′kyi’s Kyiv-based publishing house, the anthology is significant for including works that had never before appeared in print in the Russian Empire, although some were edited (with the permission of their authors) to accommodate imperial censorship. The ambitious project spans more than a century of Ukrainian poetry, ranging from the proto-romantic texts that capture the vanishing world of the Cossacks to
fin-de-sièclepoetry, with its rejection of populism and village realism.
Ukraïns′ka muza joined a short list of earlier anthologies of Ukrainian poetry, among them, Antolohiia
