Italian-Jewish writer Clara Sereni’s second book,

Casalinghitudine

, was published in 1987 following the major years of Italian Feminism, which took the form of an independent social and political movement after the mobilization of students and workers in 1968 and 1969, respectively. The complexity of the book, in terms of the connection it establishes between the feminist cause and the role of women within the domestic space, makes it one of the most important texts written by a female Italian writer in the last several decades.

The title of the text is already an indicator of Sereni’s desire to challenge the existing social order and a clear sign of her support for the feminist agenda. The word “casalinghitudine” is, in fact, a portmanteau that combines the Italian words casalinga
