[Deathly Hunger or Hunger for Death], published in translation as
Love and Death in Krishnanagar, is Kazi Nazrul Islam’s second novel. It was serialized in
Saogat[The Gift] from November 1927 and was published in book form in 1930. It is similar to his other two novels in having a rebel hero and a triangular love affair. Though in
Bandhon Hara[
Unfettered], the hero is a soldier in the British Indian Army, his rebellious nature is described several times. In Nazrul’s last novel,
Kuhelika[The Revolutionary] (1931), the hero is a revolutionary. In
Mrityukshudha,the hero is a Bolshevik.
In late 1925 or early 1926 Nazrul moved to Krishnanagar with his family. During his stay, he attended a number of political conferences. Nazrul was also struck by the poverty he
