Comrade Don Camillo] (1963), Giovannino Guareschi endured incredible personal and professional setbacks. From 1954 to 1955 he spent fourteen months in prison for allegedly having libeled former Prime Minister De Gasperi. In 1957 he relinquished his editorship of
Candido, the newspaper he helped to found after World War II, citing the toll of stress upon him. He continued to contribute articles, but four years later, in 1961, he completely renounced any further collaboration with his weekly in order to protest several Don Camillo films that had made a sham of his literary invention.
