during the years 1936 to 1941, marks Giovannino Guareschi’s first foray into collecting and publishing his previously serialized fiction. The volume, autobiographical in scope, humorously documents Guareschi’s impressions of lively city life in Milan, his relationship with his wife, and the supernatural discovery of his personal Guardian Angel.

Guareschi fictionalizes much of his own life in La scoperta, especially his courtship of and marriage to Ennia Palloncini, a beautiful red-head whom he met in Parma in 1932. He now recasts her as Margherita, the joy of his life, a classmate whom he fell in love with while he was suspended from secondary school. So smitten became the
