Dame, galline e regine128). In this novel Neera explores fin de siècle female reality within marriage, criticizing the way bourgeois society “prepares” women for wifedom with false expectations. After narrating the stories of a spinster’s hysteria and a bachelorette’s suicide in
Teresaand
Lydia, respectively, Neera suggests in this concluding novel of the trilogy that not even marriage offers women happiness and fulfillment.
