is Italian woman writer Neera’s tenth novel, published in 1889 as part of a trilogy of novels (

Teresa, Lydia

and

L’indomani

) dedicated to the exploration of post-Unification Italian reality “dalla parte di lei” [from the female perspective] (qtd. in Arslan,

Dame, galline e regine

128). In this novel Neera explores fin de siècle female reality within marriage, criticizing the way bourgeois society “prepares” women for wifedom with false expectations. After narrating the stories of a spinster’s hysteria and a bachelorette’s suicide in

Teresa

and

Lydia

, respectively, Neera suggests in this concluding novel of the trilogy that not even marriage offers women happiness and fulfillment.
