The Fiction-Makers, 1985. The twelve poems are mostly meditations, or descriptions, arising out of images of winter, defined as the time between putting the clocks back at the end of October and forward in March. The poems are full of a detailed awareness of the brilliance, colour and variety of nature, particularly wildflowers, in winter: such as the “fireweed” in “Observations; the “bright haws” and “bare snowberries” in “Slow Train to Carlisle”; and the “goatsbeard”, “rose bay willow herb” and “red campion” in “Naming the Flowers”.
