Wherein Some of the most Secret Transactions of that Time, relating to the Interest of the Pretender, and a Clandestine Separate Peace, are Detected and Laid Open. Written by Himself. Done out of French.It thus purports to be the private memoirs of the French diplomat Nicolas Mesnager (1658-1714) from his time in England in 1711-12 negotiating the end of the War of the Spanish Succession between Britain and France. These negotiations were highly secret at the time: by the terms of the Grand Alliance Britain was not allowed to treat with France independently of her allies, most importantly the Netherlands and Austria.
