is a novel written by the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes and published in 1967. Although not Fuentes’ greatest critical or commercial success, the novel has been analysed quite extensively, arguably because of the density of both its formal aspects and content.
Cambio de Piel is an ambitious and convoluted novel which defies attempts at a concise summary. Numerous themes intertwine to form the fabric of the novel, which literally asks to be unwoven. The narrator turns out to be a mentally deranged character, who almost manages to pull the strings of the plot. By the time the reader reaches the end of the novel, all semblance of verisimilitude is lost, and several mutually exclusive outcomes unfold, none of which is remotely plausible, as will be discussed.
