In 1965 Janet Frame described the manuscript she had completed two years previously,
Towards Another Summer, as “a novel-length autobiographical essay” (“Beginnings” 47). It would be another 42 years before
Towards Another Summerwould be published, several years after the author's death in January 2004, and so for almost half a century the book had little more advertisement than the potluck generic packaging Frame had consigned it to.
