This book is an important compilation of some 41 of Zinov'ev's many political and sociological essays and articles, previously published in a variety of newspapers and journals, the first appearing in 1978, the last in 2004. The title in Russian is actually ambiguous and can be interpreted variously as “at the parting of the ways” or “at the crossroads”. Arguably it highlights Zinov'ev's conviction that Russia in its current position can choose to follow a Western route, or it can resist the West. On the other hand, one could also argue that Zinov'ev is convinced that the world as it is today faces a bleak future unless it contemplates an alternative path of development to that of a Westernised “super state”.
