Jane Austen began writing
Sanditonunder the draft title of “The Brothers” on 17 January 1817 and had completed 24,000 words and 12 chapters by 18 March of the same year when she became too ill with Addison’s disease to continue. She died on 18 July 1817. Extracts from the novel were published as “The Last Work” in Chapter 13 of the second edition of J. E. Austen-Leigh’s
Memoir of the life of Jane Austenin 1871. The first complete publication was in the Chapman edition for Oxford University Press in 1925.
