] was first published at the end of 1933 in two volumes in German (Vienna: Paul Zsolnay) and in the following year in English translation (transl. Geoffrey Dunlop. New York: Viking; republished as

The Forty Days

In his novel Werfel deals with the fate of a small group of Armenian farmers and craftsmen who are resisting annihilation by the Turks in 1915 during World War I and also with the personal fate of their leader, Gabriel Bagradian. The son of a wealthy Armenian family, Gabriel has lived in Paris for twenty-three years as an archeologist, art historian, and a philosopher who is financially independent due to his family's wealth.
