by English dramatist Philip Massinger was written either in late 1623 or early 1624, and performed in 1624 at the Phoenix Playhouse in London. It was evidently quite popular with contemporary audiences and re-enacted frequently through the 1630s.
Set in Tunis in North Africa, a city ruled by the powerful Ottoman Turks, The Renegado is one among the several Elizabethan and Jacobean plays described by modern scholars as “Turk plays” which have gained much scholarly attention in recent years. These plays draw their inspiration from European accounts of Turks and the Ottoman Empire, which was expanding through North Africa and Eastern Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and would besiege Vienna in 1683, and make Euro-Muslim (or more specifically Euro-Turkish)
