Sir Walter Scott’s review of Emma was published in the prestigious Quarterly Review, 14 (October 1815), pp. 188-201. The issue actually appeared in March 1816. Emma was announced for publication by John Murray in December 1815, but the title-page bore the year 1816.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a publisher, editor, poet and novelist of enormous distinction. In 1815 he was already famous for his popular verse romances, The Lay of the Last Minstrel
