The tetralogy weaves together a large number of characters in a sweeping historical panorama, while maintaining focus on the two main characters and on the German history of the first half of the twentieth century (especially Nazism and the postwar division into two Germanies). Some of the characters also play roles in other texts by Johnson, centered on the fictional town of Jerichow in Mecklenburg, eastern Germany – a storytelling device…
