Love in the Time of Cholera(
El amor en los tiempos del cólera) relays the fifty year history of Florentino Ariza and his unrequited love for Fermina Daza. The novel is set in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, between the late 19th century and the early 20th. It is Gabriel García Márquez’s fourth major novel, after
One Hundred Years of Solitude(1967),
The Autumn of the Patriarch(1975), and
Chronicle of a Death Foretold(1981). Stylistically it is distinct from the three latter works, and one of the longest of these novels. It is marked, however, by the same issues of improbability that permeate much of García Márquez’s work, as well as by the author’s ability to mix pathos and humour in a satisfying whole.
