Spring Torrents] was first published in January 1872, following a time of great personal upheaval for Turgenev. The Franco-Prussian war of 1871 had forced him to leave his adopted home in Baden-Baden, and he spent the next year travelling between London (where much of the story was written), Moscow and St Petersburg, eventually settling in Paris.
Spring Torrents is the longest and most significant work written by Turgenev during this period of his life, and it is in this short novel that he moves away from the political theme with which he was most associated, in favour of something much more personal. Indeed, the plot can be described as partly autobiographical; like the hero Dmitrii Sanin, Turgenev spent 1840 in Germany and Italy, and always wanted to go to America. The
