This was the first novel Herbert published under his famous pseudonym, “Frank Forester.” The first English edition was published with My Shooting Box and The Deerstalkers as Frank Forester And His Friends; Or, Woodland Adventures In the Middle States of North America in 3 volumes. Numerous American editions are listed by Van Winkle up until the publication of his bibliography of Herbert in 1936; subsequent American editions have continued to appear from time to time through the 1990s. Most of the novel was first serialized in The American Turf Register for 1839; Herbert first used “Frank Forester” as his pseudonym for the publication of these articles.
