Die Korrektur,written with Inge Müller in 1957, builds on the success of
Der Lohndrücker[
The Scab, 1956] in presenting the problems of socialist reconstruction in a provocative, highly condensed form designed to “bring the struggle between old and new […] to the new audience which would decide its outcome”. The action is now set in one of the large industrial combines (here “Schwarze Pumpe”) built in the mid-fifties in the attempt to achieve rapid increases in production. Generous bonuses were paid to attract workers, resulting in an even more disparate work force and many instances of “self-help” (illegal acquisition of materials) and faking performance figures against planning quotas (“Normen”), which had played a central role in the industrial…
