] is the product of the symbiotic friendship and collaboration between Ludwig Tieck and Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder that the latter refers to as a “schönes Duodram” (“a beautiful play of twosomes”, letter to Tieck, 4 June 1792). Tieck published these eighteen essays on art anonymously in 1796 with 1797 on the title page. With most of the chapters composed by him and using the fictitious cover of a contemporary friar looking back to the Golden Age of Raphael, Michelangelo, and Dürer, Wackenroder gets the credit for the earliest manifesto of German Romanticism, since it appeared two years before the more famous

periodical of the Schlegel brothers.
