Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, 1796], Ludwig Tieck published his unfinished novel of an itinerant artist,
Franz Sternbalds Wanderungen[
Franz Sternbald's Journeying Years], two years later in 1798. W. H. Wackenroder, Tieck's close friend, had originally wanted to participate in the novel's composition, but his illness and early death prevented him from doing so. As the nucleus for his novel, Tieck resorted instead to his own contribution to their previous joint enterprise “Brief eines jungen deutschen Malers in Rom an seinen Freund in Nürnberg” [“Letter of a Young German Painter in Rome to his Friend in Nuremberg”] integrated in
Herzensergiessungen eines kunstliebenden Klosterbruders[
Outpourings of an Art-Loving Friar, 1797].…
