Hérodiade

is a verse poem written by Stéphane Mallarmé between 1864 and 1898, a period that encompassed almost the entirety of his productive life as a poet. Of its three sections, “Ouverture ancienne”, “Scène”, and “Cantique de Saint Jean”, only the second was published during Mallarmé’s lifetime. While the “Scène” appeared in

in 1871, the “Cantique de Saint Jean” was only published in 1913 and the “Ouverture” in 1926. Towards the end of his life Mallarmé also began to revise his ideas on the same subject in a series of texts grouped together as
