Eugene O’Neill wrote

A Touch of the Poet

while living in Tao House in Danville, California. He started working on it in 1935 under the title of

Hair of the Dog

. It was initially intended to be part of a large cycle of, eventually, eleven plays on American history from 1754 to 1932, entitled

A Tale of Possessors Self-Dispossessed

. The cycle was never completed. Only

A Touch of the Poet

was completed and

More Stately Mansions

was near-completion when O’Neill died in 1953.

O’Neill never got to see A Touch of the Poet on stage. Its first production was in Sweden at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm in 1957. Its first US production was at the Helen Hays Theatre in New York City in 1958.
