Unsurprisingly given their proximity to Norway, Norwegian presence was particularly strong in the Northern and Western Isles, which were settled by the mid-ninth century. Although it was less pronounced, Norwegian settlers also had an enduring linguistic, cultural and archaeological impact on the Scottish mainland and in Cumbria and Lancashire.
