King George's War is the name given to the third in a sequence of four wars fought in North America between British and French colonists and their respective Native American allies. Following King William's War (1689-98) and Queen Anne's War (1702-13), it preceded the more decisive French and Indian War (1754-63; see separate entry). Although the territorial issues at stake would remain unresolved until the 1763 Treaty of Paris, the conflict formed an important stage in the transfer of power in North America away from France and towards Britain, which ultimately led to the British colonists fighting for their independence from the mother country, aided by the displaced French.
