On 6 March, the U.S. Supreme Court held that slaves did not become free in a free state, Congress could not bar slavery from a given territory or state, and blacks could not be U.S. citizens. The Dre Scott decision would be undermined and undone by the Civil War and the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
