The Spanish Armada is defeated, at the Battle of Gravelines, by the English army it had intended to conquer. Those ships that remain are forced by westerly winds to journey back to Spain via the North Sea and the Scottish and Irish coasts. So many are wrecked in the process that only 60 of the original 130 ships successfully made it back to Spain.
