The U.S. House of Representatives gave its approval on 19 December to 2 articles of impeachment charging President Clinton with grand jury perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with a cover-up of his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Two other impeachment articles failed and the votes on the first two articles were rather close (228-206 and 221-212, respectively). Clinton became only the second president in U.S. history to be impeached.
