Legionnaires Disease killed 29 people who attended an American Legion convention between 21-24 July 1976. A form of pneumonia caused by a previously unknown bacillus subsequently named
Legionella pneumophila. The name of the disease, and bacterium, hence derives from a 1976 state convention of the American legion in Philadelphia.
