The U.S. merchant ship Mayaguez and its crew of 39 were seized by Cambodian forces in the Gulf of Siam on 12 May 1975. During rescue operations, U.S. Marines attacked Tang Island and U.S. warplanes bombed Cambodian air bases. Cambodia surrendered the Mayaguez and its crew.
